Antelopes

A Grant's Gazelle can survive without water for several days.

If you could run as fast as an antelope you would win all of the Cottage Lane races! We saw 10 different types of antelopes while on safari.
Some were as small as a dog, while others were larger than a cow. They travel in herds for safety, and were delightful to watch because they're so light-footed.

An impala is another type of ungulate.

The different types of antelopes all have hooves for feet. Scientists call hoofed animals "ungulates". A wildebeest is also part of the antelope family, but because it's so special I've given it its own blog page.wink

Impalas and zebras enjoy the sunny afternoon.

Antelopes are herbivores. They roam around a large area grazing, but most don't need to migrate like the wildebeest, because they don't run out of grass to eat.

All antelopes are herbivores.

The grown male antelopes have horns. They are permanent. They don't shed them like a deer sheds its antlers each year. It was fun comparing the different types of antelope horns. Each was unique and beautiful.

This Thomson's Gazelle is surprised to see a picture of itself on the side of our safari truck!

Thomson's Gazelle, Grant's Gazelle, Oribi, Klipspringer, Kirk's Dik-Dik, Impala, Topi, Hartebeest, Eland, Waterbuck, Wildebeest are all different antelopes we saw on safari. The name of our safari company is Thomson Safaris, because the owners' last name is Thomson. It's not surprising that they've used the picture of a Thomson's gazelle for their emblem. If there were a type of antelope that happened to have your last name, what would it look like? What would its horns look like?

An Eland is the largest antelope. A male can weigh 2000 pounds!

After looking at the photos and videos, think about why most antelopes don't migrate. Why don't they run out of food?

A doe and her children eat brown grass during the dry season on the Serengeti.

Since only the grown males have horns, how do the females and babies protect themselves from predators like lions, cheetahs, and leopards?

This cute little fella is an antelope called a Klipspringer. It's unusual because it lives in rocky areas rather than on the savannah.

If there were no more antelopes on the Serengeti, how would this change the ecosystem?

  1. Female gazelles probally don’t attack the predator but instead run away since theirs so fast. Either that or they stay a little close to the males.

  2. It is very interesting to here about antelopes because all of us in NY don't see that kind of thing very often.

  3. I love how Antelopes antlers are.Antelopes have such beautiful fur.I know that the mom antelopes stay with the baby  antelopes.

    • They use the horns when fighting each other, or when they’re trying to protect themselves from other predators. They don’t hunt. They’re herbivores.
