I’m feeling a little bit nervous, but can’t wait to get started!
Cleaning House in My Brain
I’m cleaning house
In my brain,
It’s BACK TO SCHOOL
Time again.
Shine windows,
Paint doors,
Vacuum rugs,
Polish floors.
Brush away
TV shows,
Picnics, beaches,
Free time goes.
Bring my memory
Back in gear,
Sweep the channels,
Crystal clear.
My brain is
An amazing tool,
And it’s all ready for
BACK TO SCHOOL!
Poem by Kalli Dakos
Do you ever find that a poem captures how you’re feeling inside, even if the exact words don’t? In this poem by Kalli Dakos, I like the way she captures how you have to gear up your brain for school. You know your brain will be introduced to new ideas its never encountered before, and it will be expected to think in ways its never thought before. That’s why school is so WONDERFUL….and so scary.
On Friday, I begin my new school, The University of Cape Town. The class I’m taking is called, Environmental Change and Challenge. What do you think it will be about?
I know some kids will say, “You’re a teacher! Why are you now a student?!”
To them I say, “There’s so much to learn in life! Why would anyone ever want to stop trying to learn new things?!”
Of course, you learn new things all the time outside of school, and that’s really valuable. But school is special because it focuses your brain, and there’s a teacher to push you to learn the most you can each day, AND to help you do it. Isn’t it an exciting feeling, a powerful feeling, when you realize you know something now you didn’t know before?!?
So I’m feeling very excited….but also a little bit nervous. What will the teacher be like? Will he be nice? How many students will be in the class? Will I be able to keep up with the work load?
Do you have any words of advice for me?
I have some advice for you. Dont be afraid think of it as your first day of school as a kid as if you started all over withh a new beginning (;
What's it like there
It’s very exciting to be at the university. The students here are learning as much as they can for three reasons: 1)They enjoy learning new things; 2) They’re interested in a particular topic and want to learn all they can about it; 3) They want to educate themselves so they can get a good job and have a good future. It’s always energizing to be with people who are using their brains as much as they can. Do you think you’ll go to a university when you grow up? What topic would you want to study?
