Recently, I had the privilege of visiting the Grade 4s at the International School of Cape Town. The children and teachers were very welcoming. Their lessons are similar to those at Cottage Lane, but there are only about 15 children per class! There are two classes of each grade at the elementary level, and there are classes for kindergarten all the way up through high school at this one school. I’m sure you’ll all notice right away that the students wear uniforms to school.
During Maths, the learners reviewed how to multiply one digit by a two-digit number. They then practiced finding the perimeter of shapes around the classroom and in their math book. Think about how knowing multiplication can help you find the perimeter.
I enjoyed having the opportunity to read Animals on the Loose at Cottage Lane to Mr. Greenwood’s Grade 4 class. This is a story written by my students a few years ago. The South African kids loved it! They were very inquisitive and asked many questions. Maybe they’ll write their own story!
During social studies, they were studying the times of the Romans. They especially liked the stories about the Romans gods and goddesses. During their technology class, they enjoyed working on creating a PowerPoint presentation about a Roman god/goddess.
Classes are taught in English and everyone speaks English. All of the Grade 3 and Grade 4 students at this school take a French class with a specialist teacher. The teacher had them singing in French so they thought it was a lot of fun. When they reach Grade 5, they can choose whether to continue with French, or take Spanish or Afrikaans.

Are the books the students are reading in a different language ?
All of the books the children are reading in this classroom are written in English. English is the international language, so everyone at school is encouraged to use it. Of course, it’s also good to know other languages.
