Take a look at this picture. This mountain is very different looking, isn’t it? As a matter of fact, it kind of looks like a __________. (You figure out the word!)
It’s unique – no other mountain in the world looks like this. The city of Cape Town, South Africa, is located at its base, between the mountain and the ocean. Isn’t that an awesome place for a city?! When people anywhere in the world see this mountain, they say, “Oh, that’s Table Mountain in Cape Town.” The mountain has become an easily recognized symbol for this location. We say it’s iconic because it’s an icon (a symbol) for Cape Town.
It’s fun to be able to recognize iconic features and objects from around the world!
Here’s a TEST. Don’t be scared.
Let’s see how you do. If you don’t know where one of these features/objects is located, think about how you could find out.

There are so many exciting, beautiful and interesting places in the world! When you hear about one, or read about one, just make a mental note to yourself, “Must visit!” Then throughout your lifetime make it happen! Your life will be more interesting if you do!
In South Africa, many people speak English. That’s good news for me! There are also 11 other official languages in this country. Most of the people come from tribes, and each tribe has its own official language. Everyone is encouraged to learn English, though, because that’s become the international language. It’s also good to keep your own language, because that’s part of your culture and who you are.
I want to go to all those places so bad.
WOW!
WOW!
My Auntie Ann has been to all of those places. And she is going to Ireland soon.
Cool. What’s a good icon for Ireland? Blarney Castle comes to my mind. I was there many years ago and remember their beautiful castles and rolling green hills.
