During the week of September 24–28th, 2018, William O. Schaefer Elementary School, along with hundreds of schools and youth organizations across the United States, will participate in “Start With Hello Week” . The activities introduced during the week will teach students the skills they need to create a culture of inclusion and connectedness, and encourage them to reach out to and include those who they normally might not include.
Just one word, “Hello”, can change a life.
We are hopeful, “Start With Hello Week” will springboard a culture of inclusion that values each individual student and member of our community. To read more about what our school is doing, CLICK HERE.
Like many teachers, I start the school year with a focus on student’s names. I see all the students at W.O.S. and for me this focus is extremely important. A name is usually the first word recognized and the first word printed by students. Talking and reading about names can invite conversation about family stories and cultural backgrounds.
This week in library the focus will be on… names. We will be reading several name themed books and promoting conversation about our names.
- Is there a story behind your name? What is the story?
- Does your name have any personal or cultural meaning to your family?
- Do you have a nickname? How did you get your nickname
- What do you like about your name?
- Is there something you would like to share about your name? Please click “comment” below and share your story
