Below is a brief look at the history of African Americans and Black History Month.

“What makes a person a true American hero?

Ruby Nell Bridges at age 6, was the first African American child to attend William Franz Elementary School in New Orleans after Federal courts ordered the desegregation of public schools. Using primary sources, students will learn about Ruby’s important role in the civil rights movement asΒ a courageous and brave role model.

First and second grade students will look at pictures (primary resources) of Ruby Bridges and the civil rights movement that help tell the story of what Ruby did and some of the ways in which her world was different than the one we live in today.
