Did you ever hear about Marley Dias? Marley, a 13-year-old, started the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign because she was tired of only reading about white boys and their dogs! Let’s listen to her tell us about her campaign.
Have you ever felt like Marley? Look around the room, do you only see white boys and white girls and dogs? I bet you can’t help but notice that there are differences in race, religion, and ethnicity among you and your fellow classmates. Like Marley, would you like to learn more about your classmates and their backgrounds?
During library lessons this year, we will visit countries through books so we can learn more about your classmates and their background (where they come from).
Together and alone, you will be reading books to help you understand each otherโs cultures in order to expand your understanding of cultural differences.
As a student to our diverse school population, you will then select a book that YOU think might help other students understand children from different backgrounds. Your book choice can be from the William O. Schaefer library, the public library or from your own book collection at home. ย Your book selection will be displayed on a special shelf in the library for the students and teachers of the William O. Schaefer community to access.ย
