Over time humans modify and adapt their environments by building and developing housing structures, transportation systems, marketplaces, and recreational areas. The Little House written by Virginia Lee Burton is a wonderful visual representation of these kinds of changes and provides an opportunity for students to imagine the kinds of environmental changes that communities undergo.
The ageless story, The Little House is about a house that is built on the beautiful countryside that slowly, over the passage of time, becomes centered and forgotten in a big city. In the end, the house is willed to a great ancestor who has the house transferred back to the country of its beginnings
In 1950, there were 408 farms in the county. Nyack had a shoe industry. Haverstraw was a center for brick making.
By 1960, there were just 100 farms left; by 1970, that number would drop to 50. Now just 381 Rocklanders work in agriculture, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2014 American Community Survey.
Using photographs, students will look back at the historical photos of the Rockland area. Observe. Reflect.Question.
