Hi! Welcome to Week Two!
At the beginning of every meeting, we celebrate our connection to nature and the Earth with a yoga pose and salutation, “Hello Sun! Hello Earth! Hello Rain! Hello Wind! Hello Ocean! Hello Wind! Hello Rain! Hello Earth! Hello Sun! Namaste.”
Today we will add additional poses that represent something associated with sea or ocean. Each member will choose an “Ocean Yoga” card and lead the pose!
Have you ever walked along a beautiful beach and been surprised to find a piece of plastic at your feet? Trash in the ocean has a serious consequence for people and sea life!
Ocean debris is a major threat to sea turtle’s survival. Did you know that most species of sea turtles are listed as Endangered or Critically Endangered? Many sea turtles mistake trash for food, they are known to eat plastics and other buoyant debris. Trash can also get in the way of sea turtles ability to swim, sometimes getting entangled in abandoned lines and netting.
Plastic lasts forever. It never biodegrades. Yet we use it to make disposable objects that we discard after a short period of time, sometimes just minutes, or a few hours. Take action. Bring your own bags and cups. Avoid plastic bottles. Time to act is now!
Watch the video below to see how easliy this happens.
Cleaning up debris throughout the entire ocean is an impractical task—there’s just too much of it! Can you think of ways that we can help?
Can you commit to one plastic-free change in your life? Share it below!
Maybe…we can get crafty! Before you toss an empty toilet paper tube in the recycle bin, think of a way you could use it again. How clever can you be? And that goes for jars, cans, and boxes. For example, you can turn an empty containers into a sea turtle marionette!
What ideas do you have that will allow WOS to collect clear, reusable materials?
