Analogies make connections between unlike objects. An analogy is a comparison of two pairs of words that are related in a similar way. Analogies build vocabulary and analyze the relationships between words. Analogies strengthen reading comprehension and writing skills, and also help prepare you for creating metaphors and similes, which are awesome to use when writing poetry.
Analogies can be fun to learn! Analogy games make learning analogies even more exciting! Watch this video to learn all the analogy types.
Together, we will explore the world of analogies by playing the game, “Kick Me”! Named for the “Kick Me” sign prank, there is NO kicking involved. Students find answers to blanks on a worksheet by looking at the words put on students’ backs using labels. This encourages movement in the lesson thus increasing focus, engagement, and retention of information. Students will be able to complete analogies by analyzing the relationships being used to compare the words.
Kick Me Rules:
- Find the answers to your worksheet on the backs of your classmates.
- When you have them all, sit on your desk so that others can still see your label.
- There is no kicking in “Kick Me”.
