In order to better understand the importance of Earth Day, kindergarten students will read The Great Kapok Tree, by Lynne Cherry. The Kapok tree is found in the Amazon rain forest.
The Amazon rainforest is home to a bewildering array of wildlife, including macaws, toucans, tyrant flycatchers, capybaras, tapir, sloths, squirrel monkeys, red howler monkeys, jaguars, and caimans. Click the link, Virtual Field Trip – Amazon Rainforest, to learn about the layers of the rainforest and the animals who live there.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the interdependence of animals, people and plants in the rainforest by participating in an ecosystem simulation.
