Calling ALL poetry!!
Inspired by the recent trend of McDonalds, William O. Schaefer students will be sharing and distributing their poetry to Tappan Zee High School students who buy lunch!
McDonald’s, had the brilliant idea of putting a book instead of a toy in their Happy Meals. McDonald’s included four different books in this experiment. When I heard McDonalds was promoting literacy I was over the moon and sent my husband out in search of all four titles! Three of them were Valentine’s Day themed: Clark the Shark Takes Heart by Bruce Hale and illustrated by Guy Francis, Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff and Felicia Bond, and Pete the Cat: Valentine’s Day Is Cool by Kimberly and James Dean. The fourth book is the classic Paddington by Michael Bond and illustrated by R. W. Alley. McDonald’s distributed 50 million children’s books! Kudos!
Reading and writing poetry supports and enhances students’ language and literacy learning experiences in rich and engaging ways. Writing poetry enables writers to convey feelings and experiences and to create images about everyday objects with literary language, deliberate word choices and poetic devices. What better way for William O. Schaefer authors to share the literacy experience than to share their poetry!
Together Tappan Zee High School Library Media Specialist, Lois Parker-Hennion and I worked together to and received permission to distribute poems written by William O. Schaefer students to high schools students buying lunch. Authentic learning engages all the senses allowing students to create a meaningful, useful, shared outcome. They are real life tasks, or simulated tasks that provide the learner with opportunities to connect directly with the real world. We are grateful for this opportunity.
William O Schaefer is grateful to ARAMARK Food Services and the administration of Tappan Zee High School, Dr. Jennifer Amos, Juliet Gevargis and Richard Neidhart for this opportunity.
Currently, there is a basket in the library where we are collecting poetry written by William O. Schaefer students. Be sure to contribute!!
Below is an example of some of the poetry the High School students will be receiving. We hope you enjoy listening to the poets of Room 65!!!
