Tales of spared turkeys date back to the Lincoln days. According to one story, Lincoln’s son Tad begged his father to write out a presidential pardon for the bird meant for the family’s Christmas table, arguing it had as much a right to live as anyone. Lincoln acquiesced and the turkey lived. On November 14, 1989, President George H.W. Bush was the first to actually offer a turkey pardon. For more information, read The Definitive History of the Presidential Turkey Pardon and from the White House Archives: Thanksgiving with the Presidents.
President Barack Obama has spared two turkeys from the oven, fulfilling the annual tradition of a presidential pardon for a couple of lucky birds ahead of the American harvest holiday of Thanksgiving. Mr Obama pardoned Popcorn, who shared the stage with the president at the White House on a cold drizzly day Wednesday. An alternate turkey, named Caramel, also received a pardon, though it did not have the benefit of a face-to-beak meeting with the president. Last year marked the 66th anniversary of the National Thanksgiving Turkey presentation, and the second time the American people cast their vote via the White House Facebook page to decide which of two turkeys would receive the honor.
Now it is your turn to spare a turkey from someone’s dinner table and ensure that the rest of it’s days are spent roaming on a farm or in the wilderness! Your challenge is to “argue” why your turkey “has as much a right to live as anyone.”
