Task Statement:
National Public Radio’s(NPR’s) Student Podcast Challenge is officially open for submissions, woot! The deadline for submissions is April 28, 2023.

With that news, I’m so excited to share a special award we are adding to this year’s contest – the best mental health podcast prize.
There is no set way to define this topic, and please share any story related to mental health that speaks to you. In previous years, NPR received and loved stories at the intersections of identity and wellness, on reflections on body image and about romantic or friend relationships, and the impact of COVID and remote and/or hybrid learning.
But, of course, if that doesn’t speak to you, don’t sweat it! Explore your own interests and stories.
Getting Started:

The fifth annual NPR Student Podcast Challenge is open for entries!

What do you envision for your podcast?

Topic
What is my story’s driving question?
What is the story not about?
How will I ensure my story is fair to the people and ideas it represents?
How will I engage my audience — and hold them?
What are my dream ingredients?
What will the audience remember when it’s over?

Day TWO:
Listen to Examples:
Assignment: As you listen, make a note of the sounds you hear — the ones that aren’t people speaking — on paper. Come up with a list of three to five sounds you think should be in your class’ podcast.
Listen to this “Radio Field Trip” from New Hampshire Public Radio. (4 mins 12 s)
Where is host Rick Ganley? How can you tell?
And here’s this one, from Radio Rookies, a series from WNYC. (8 mins)
Apart from sounds of Edward’s narration — what sounds did you hear? How do these sounds help tell Edward’s story?

Day THREE & FOUR:
Research and Write your script
How to Write Podcast Script

Day FIVE:
Practice interviews and or begin recording on your own.
Partner 1: Ask your partner about the one thing they are most PROUD of. It could be something at home, it could be something at school, it could be something athletic — it doesn’t matter. Once they’ve answered, keep asking questions about their response until the timer goes off. Why are they proud? How did they achieve this?

When the timer goes off, turn off the recording and switch.

Partner 2: now start recording again — and ask Partner 1 the thing they’re most proud of. Don’t stop asking questions until the timer goes off.

When the timer goes off, turn off the recording. DEBRIEF

HERE IS THE RUBRIC TO GUIDE YOUR WORK> YOUR PODCAST WILL BE GRADED USING THIS RUBRIC.

Recording:

  • If will be using your smartphone as your recording device, make sure you review the following basics:
  • You need a sound recording app. On Android, you can download a free voice recording app like “RecForge II” or “Audio Recorder.” For iPhones, in the extras folder, find the “Voice Memos” app.
  • Make sure you know where the microphone is on your phone.
  • When recording, find a reasonably quiet space.
  • To begin recording, start by pressing the “Record” button or a red square. To finish, press the same button again.
  • Make sure to position the microphone about six inches away from your mouth.
  • Check your audio, preferably with a pair of headphones. It should be free of background sound and loud enough to hear, but not so loud that it crackles. Record for 10 seconds and then play it back; adjust microphone position based on your findings.
  • After you finish, make sure to enter a title for the recording and save it.
  • To get the file to your computer so you can edit it later on, use AirDrop, Bluetooth transfer, email or Google Drive upload.
