The Heimlich Maneuver

David Roach of Greenville Middle Academy: social studies teacher, coach, first responder, and now a hero. During the first shift of Greenville Middle Academy's 8th grade lunch, Turner Hayes approached the teachers' table in distress. It took the teachers a moment to realize what was happening because the student was unable to communicate verbally—he was red-faced and teary-eyed. Turner was choking.

There was half a second of confusion and panic, but fortunately there were two first responders seated among the teachers. Mr. David Roach reacted calmly, quickly, and heroically, rushing around the table to engage the student in the Heimlich maneuver. It took Mr. Roach several tries to dislodge the obstruction, and during this time, the 8th graders of GMA did an excellent job remaining seated and calm.

Afterward, Turner was understandably shaken, but otherwise fine. He checked in with the school nurse, and then returned to the cafeteria to collect his things. He walked in to a round of thunderous applause from the student body, equal parts joy at seeing him well, and gratitude to Mr. Roach, whose quick, decisive action saved the day.

Lost that Spark

Muscular dystrophy left Mitchell Wilson struggling to do simple things like walking around the block or climbing stairs. He also had to use a walker at school. Doctors had urged him to exercise regularly to stave off the disease's effects, something that was growing increasingly difficult for the boy.

Wilson was mugged last November by a 12-year-old boy from his school. The assailant was after the iPhone Wilson borrowed from his dad. The bully was arrested and removed from the school they both attended.

Mitchell told his grandmother, " ‘If I have to go back to that school, I’ll kill myself,’”  Mitchell Wison commited suicide last week. Read his story here..

What would you do if you witnessed a school mate harrassing and bullying another school mate? Mitchell' dad said, “So let’s hopefully save some other people’s children so they don’t have to go through this mess.” What does he mean? Explain your thinking.

Smoking

An ex- smoker who has had a tracheotomy as a result of smoking speaks from the heart about how starting smoking at a young age caused multiple cancers. This well known speaker has refused bribes from the cigarette companies to stop talking. Instead he has banded with many others in speaking out against the tobacco companies targeting youth. His message can be seen in well known political writer Michael Moore’s commentary to the tobacco industry.
