This year’s PARP book is Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. It is a fantasy-adventure children’s novel inspired by Chinese folklore.  There are many activities and discussions created by the PARP committee.  In addition, this month’s challenge is to make a dragon come alive!

In Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, Minli meets a dragon who springs to life from a painting (pages 55-59). Once its eyes are painted, the dragon springs to life! Dragon describes this pivotal moment: “I knew this was my chance to free myself…………I jumped from where I was and rushed over everyone, knocking down desks and chairs and columns. I saw the blue sky and green leaves through a window, went toward it, and simply crashed through the wall to get through.”

Your challenge:

  • Paint a dragon on paper then make it come to life.
  • First create your 2-dimensional dragon on paper ..
  • Then, make it come to life by creating a 3-dimensional version!

What will look the same? What will look different? What shapes might you use? Use found materials to create your 3-dimensional dragon. Suggested materials: cereal boxes, recyclables, cardboard, string, etc.

Watch this video to learn more about 2-dimensional shapes verses 3-dimensional shapes:

Please bring your 3-dimensional dragon to the main office to be displayed.

Due Date: Thursday, March 24th
