Eating Disorders

“Feeding and eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that results in the altered consumption or absorption of food and that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning” (DSM-V; American Psychiatric Association, 2013). Some individuals with disordered eating report eating-related behaviors similar to those commonly endorsed by individuals with substance use disorders, such as craving and patterns of compulsive use, which may reflect impairment to similar neural systems—those associated with regulatory self-control and reward.
Eating disorders most commonly diagnosed in adolescents include Anorexia Nervosa- Restricting Type or Binge-Eating/Purging Type, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge-Eating Disorder.
