Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Reading
The Human Rights Campaign envisions a world where every member of the LGBTQ family has the freedom to live their truth without fear, and with equality under the law. On Thursday, February 25th, join educators, parents, and community leaders across the country for Jazz & Friends National Day of School and Community Readings. This day was chosen with the hope of creating welcoming and affirming spaces for transgender and non-binary youth through the reading of inclusive children’s literature, such as I Am Jazz, My Rainbow and When Aidan Became A Brother.
Please join together to advocate for the rights of transgender and non-binary youth and ensure that every child has the support needed to thrive and be their whole self in their school and community.
This year, the organization Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation’s Welcoming Schools is highlighting three books: I Am Jazz by Jessica Herthel and Jazz Jennings, My Rainbow by DeShanna Neil and When Aidan Became A Brother by Kyle Lukoff
You may want to read one, two or all three of these books. These books teach about gender and breakdown stereotypes related to gender expression and gender identity.
Creating schools that nurture academic achievement, provide physical and emotional safety and welcome all students are common goals for many educators. In order for students to feel supported and empowered to express their identities and interests at school, we must create gender-inclusive environments that affirm all children and that help all children move beyond the limitations of gender stereotyping.
