A graduate of Haverford College and Teachers College at Columbia University, Sarah McMane teaches English to students in grades 9-12 at Tappan Zee High School. In addition, she has taught Creative Writing, Public Speaking, Poetry, Writer’s Workshop, American Popular Culture, and Senior Seminar — a course that allows seniors to explore career interests through local internships. A grant recipient of the Southampton Writers Conference, Ms. McMane studied poetry with U.S. Poet Laureate Billy Collins and maintains an interest in creative writing. Her poem, “For My Daughter” has been published in several places on the internet including amightygirl.com.
Since she has been the literary advisor to the school’s art & literary magazine, Tones, the magazine has won numerous awards including the highest level gold award for best high school literary magazine from Syracuse University Journalism School’s Empire State School Press Association (ESSPA). In 2014, she was awarded Advisor of the Year from ESSPA.
In addition, Ms. McMane founded the Tappan Zee High School English Honor Society as well as her school’s Peer Leadership Program, and Social Justice Club. She has been nationally recognized as a PBS Teacher Leader, Tufts University Teacher of Excellence, and Teen Ink National Educator of the Year (Honorable Mention), and locally recognized as a Barnes and Noble “My Favorite Teacher” (Winner, Rockland and Bergen County, 2012).
Born in Manhattan, Ms. McMane grew up in Pleasantville, NY and currently resides in Central Valley, NY with her husband, two children, two cats, and a dog. Though she has spent most of her life in New York state, she has traveled extensively — to 36 out of the 50 states and to 12 different countries. When she is not working, she enjoys reading, writing, traveling, spending time with her family, watching films, and shopping for bargains at flea markets and antique stores.
