Designing Bridges

IMG_0917IMG_0911

This week we will continue to work on designing and testing our bridges.  I can’t wait to see how many books we can support by applying the information we have learned from the computer based engineering program, designing paper bridges, and reading about bridges.  We will also have an opportunity this week to see many of the bridge types we have discussed during our trip on the circle line.  What an exciting week awaits us!  See you tomorrow! 🙂

Optimism

“I hope the millions of people I’ve touched have the optimism and desire to share their goals and hard work and persevere with a positive attitude.” ~Michael Jordan

October’s Superpower is Optimism!

  • Optimism is ability to look on the more favorable side of situations; positive attitude; cheerfulness.
  • Optimism is the tendency to expect the best and see the best in all things.
  • Optimism is a habit of expecting things to turn out for the best.

You have the power to look on the positive side. You have a choice on how you live your life and how you view your situation. We also can help others to look on the bright side. These two videos are great reminders:

  1. It’s a choice to be optimistic.
  2. Jessica’s Affirmations
Our book of the month, An Angel for Solomon Singer, demonstrates optimism.

  • What are Solomon Singer’s dreams? What do all of his dreams have in common?
  • How do his dreams make him feel? Why does Solomon become happier by the end of the story, even though most of his dreams have not come true?
  • Do dreams really come true at the Westway Café? Explain your answer. What does this story tell you about the idea of home?

Remember Mr. Onativia’s optimistic words, “I choose to be happy. I choose to look at the good. I possess the qualities to be happy and successful.”

Welcome, Parents!

Patriot Day

Patriot Day is an annual observance on September 11. Patriot Day is to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001.  Courage is September’s Word of the Month. September 11th reminds us of all those who displayed great acts of courage that day. We must remember that ordinary citizens have the power to be extraordinary.  Maira Kalman’s Fireboat: The Heroic Adventures of the John J. Harvey inspires all of us to be heroic, no matter our size or age.

Fireboat is our book of the month to demonstrate our word of the month “courage.”

Consider one of the following options and post your comment to the blog:

  • How does the Fireboat serve as a patriotic symbol of America?
  • Identify a scenario where you will display courage this school year?
  • Write a thank you letter to local fire departments/ police departments for their daily acts of courage.
  • Visit fireboat.org and read and additional news article. Share what you learned to this post.

Courage

Today we had our first assembly. Mrs. Ramirez and Mrs. Beglin unleased our Character Education Program, shared our Code of Conduct and reviewed expectations for a super powerful year.

The Superpower for September is Courage!

You are an everyday hero. Listen to Kid President tell you how to be extraordinary.

Remember Mrs. King’s warrior words, “I have the power and the courage to be a positive, proactive bystander.” Practice the warrior stance and the pulling back of the arrow to find the courage within yourself. SuperWarrior

Use your superpower, COURAGE, to:

  • Stand up for yourself
  • Stand up for others
  • Make a new friend
  • Try out for a team
  • Develop a skill
  • Audition for a play
  • Speak in front of an audience
  • Ask for help
  • Treat failures as opportunities to grow
