Our school is participating in a fun reading project: the Read for the Rockland Boulders’ Record Reading Challenge, sponsored by the Rockland Boulders, Scholastic Book Fairs, Active International and NY’s 529 College Savings Program. This Reading Challenge unites students from Rockland and surrounding counties in an attempt to establish a habit of independent reading at home.

Students will be given a Rockland Boulders log sheet the number of minutes read outside of school each day MUST be recorded and signed by a parent or guardian. Students should return their reading logs to the library on April 4th, April 11th and April 18th. Please be sure to sign your child’s reading log. No logs will be accepted after Thursday, April 18, 2019.

The results will be reported to Scholastic Book Fairs who in turn will work with the Rockland Boulders to distribute the prizes.

Here are a few simple ways to help your child become a record-breaking reader:

* Set a goal together and encourage reading with library visits, story time at home, and conversations about books. Let your child see you reading.

* Encourage your child to participate and track reading minutes in the reading log provided for this purpose.

* Limit screen time. The more time children spend using electronic devices and watching television, the less they read.

*Visit the local “Mighty Five Libraries”.

Ms. Eyer’s Sock Challenge

diy-sock-animal1Kid President’s Socktober and William O. Schaefer Student Government are inspiring students to donate a pair of socks to others in need. This small act of love also inspired this month’s creativity challenge. So take out those socks you’ve never worn or the forlorn socks in the laundry room with no partners and whip up a cute sock animal!

Challenge: Research an animal of your choice. Once you have researched and learned about the animal, transform an ordinary sock into that animal.

Entries should include:

  • Student’s name and teacher’s name.
  • Name of the animal.
  • 3 facts about the animal.
  • 1 question you still wonder/have about the animal.
  • Sock animals must not exceed 12 inches in height nor width.
  • No Monkey business!
  • All entries must be submitted before October 19th.
  • Here is the Sock Challenge Entry Form.

Creativity is seeing the world in a new way.
Have Fun!

Learning how to sew some basic stitches is an important life skill. Spend a quiet afternoon learning these two simple stitches. The two simple stitches illustrated in the video below are a great starting point for how to sew. Watch the how-to video tutorial to find out how to do a running stitch and a back-stitch. Both stitches will be very useful when making your sock animal. Happy sewing!

Our First Weeks as Second Graders

Our class has been hard at work in second grade!  We have been making new friends, writing small moment stories, building our reading stamina and learning new strategies and tools to add and subtract.  Our class blog is a place where you can find resources to support the learning done in the classroom and even interact with classmates.  We are so excited to continue the great work we have begun in second grade!

Flexibility!

Be flexible!
“You can’t control the wind but you can adjust the sails!”
Flexibility is the ability to adapt to changing circumstances.

Russet is a 3 year old English Bulldog who seems to be having some trouble fitting her bone through the doggy door. However, with much effort and some flexible thinking Russet finds success!

Chester and Wilson are two of a kind, and do everything together and in their very own rigid ways. Then wacky Lilly moves into the neighborhood and turns their world upside down.

Library Super Bowl Challenge!

Super Bowl 52 will be played in Minneapolis at U.S. Bank Stadium, which will have just finished hosting its second Minnesota Vikings season after being built in time for the 2016 NFL season.

“The Duke” is the official game football of the National Football League® (NFL) and the only football that is allowed on field for the Super Bowl. It’s a tradition that began in 1941, and a key piece of Wilson history.
“The Duke” is hand-made at the Wilson Football Factory in Ada, OH. This factory is the world’s oldest factory dedicated to producing game-ready leather footballs only.

In less than 72 hours after the two teams were decided, the Eagles and the Patriots received the game footballs that they will be using in the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl ball has the Super Bowl logo stamped on the ball, along with the names of both teams, date and location.

Wilson sends 108 game footballs to each team. Kicker football (or “k balls) are sent directly to the Super Bowl officiating team. Teams present their 54 game balls to the officials on game day for inspection, then a DNA ink is added to the laces to indicate they are the authentic on-field game balls. Letter “K” is inscribed on the kicker ball, sealed in boxes (with anti-tampering tape), sent to the NFL official hotel one week before the game and then delivered to the officials’ room approximately 2.5 hours prior to kickoff.

The Wilson Football Factory takes pride in making the super Bowl footballs. Click here to see pictures of the factory.

Wilson and NFL Trivia:
Average number of footballs made by a single cowhide: 10
Pounds of air pressure in an NFL game ball: 13 psi
Total number of game balls used during the Super Bowl: 120, including 12 Kicker Balls
Number of laces found on an NFL game ball: 1
Total number of lace holes on an NFL game ball: 16
Total number of panels on an NFL game ball: 4

Jane Helser recently retired after working for nearly 50 years at the Wilson Sporting Goods factory, the source of the N.F.L.’s handmade footballs. Watch the video below and listen for additional triva.

Be sure to count or tally how many balls,”The Duke”, were are actually used during the Super Bowl game. Bring your final tally to the library to enter the “Super Bowl” raffle! Winner will win NFL Coloring Book (2017-2018): All 32 NFL American Football team logos to color!</strong

The raffle jar to participate is on the circulation desk. Deadline Monday 2/5 @2:30

Growing like Beanstalks!

In the first week of second grade, our class has already begun to develop good reading habits!  We are working hard to build our reading stamina, scoop words into longer phrases to improve fluency, and remind ourselves to stop, think and retell as we read in order to check our understanding.  Just like the beanstalk that grew to the sky from Jack’s magic beans (thanks for sharing the story with us, Ms. Eyer!) we too are growing as readers!

June- Reflection

Look how we have grown!
Reflection is the willingness to learn about yourself. What have I achieved and what else do I need to do?

Assembly Read Aloud:

31JNlNhoafL._AC_US160_The OK Book by Amy Krouse Rosenthal

OK is turned on its side, upside down, and right side up to show that being OK can really be quite great. Whether OK personifies an OK skipper, an OK climber, an OK lightning bug catcher, or an OK whatever there is to experience, ok is an OK place to be. And being OK just may lead to the discovery of what makes one great.
