Compassion is this month’s superpower, and we are excited about completing green hearts to display our acts of compassion.
At our character education assembly, we discussed compassion, listened to a podcast on sportsmanship and were inspired by the stories of our superhero. Read more here… Compassion Assembly.
Eve Bunting’s book, Train to Somewhere, shares the story of Marianne and thousands of homeless children who were sent from New York City by train to families in the Midwest in the hope they would be adopted.
Do some research on Orphan Trains. Post information that you found interesting and why.
February’s superpower is acceptance. We all are unique and have the right to be accepted. Our book of the month is by Toni Morrison.
“This book is about you. Even though the main event in the story took place many years ago, what happened before it and after is now part of all our lives. Because remembering is the mind’s first step toward understanding, this book is designed to take you on a journey through a time in American life when there was as much hate as there was love; as much anger as there was hope; as many heroes as cowards. As with any journey, there is often a narrow path to walk before you can see the wide road ahead. And sometimes there is a closed gate between the path and the road.”
In this two-minute mini-documentary, Toni Morrison introduces her book and shows people the relevance of the 1954 Brown v. Board of Education decision.
After reading the story, if you could ask Linda Brown a question, what would it be? Post your question to the comment section.
Hi Everyone,
Be sure to check out our math “Multiplication/Division” page for the videos on how to divide decimals like we discussed in class!
It will definitely be a helpful review!
See you tomorrow 🙂

Hi there,
The video from class today is posted under social studies- government- three branches of government. The same place where the webquest documents were posted.
See you tomorrow 🙂

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”
~ Paul Boese
Forgiveness is Cottage Lane’s Superpower of the month. At our assembly, the Forgiveness Fairy reminded us about the importance of forgiveness, strategies and new beginnings. Please visit the Forgiveness Assembly page for additional songs and videos.
Below is our poem for the month, “New Beginnings”. A New Year’s Resolution is a tradition which a person makes a promise to do an act of self-improvement or something slightly nice, beginning on New Year’s Day.
Have you thought about your New Year’s Resolution for 2015? What will it be? Post your New Year’s Resolution and explain how the superpower, forgiveness, plays a critical role in your “New Beginning.”
As part of the Models and Designs unit you will be required to keep an engineering log. When people make new designs or inventions they keep a detailed log of their thinking so that they can remember all of their ideas. It is important to remember your successes and good ideas so that you can continue to integrate them into your design. Documenting things that go wrong is also important because it a mistake is really just a new piece of information. Things going wrong is helpful, those situations can teach you something new about your design.
How to start your engineering log.
Watch the video below to watch this process in action.
Be inspired by the paper bag. Black Friday usually marks the start of holiday shopping. This year many stores are opening on Thursday. Here is an opportunity to “Respect the Turkey,” “Save the Earth” and design a gift by participating in the Paper Bag Challenge. Please visit Mrs. McBride’s website for additional information – The Paper Bag Challenge 2014.
November’s Superpower is gratitude. Our book of the month is The Most Thankful Thing by Lisa McCourt. A little girl asks her mom what her “most thankful thing ever” is. Her Mom turns the question into a fun trip down memory lane. It is important to be grateful for all our experiences. While John F. Kennedy’s quote reminds us that “We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”
Grateful: A Love Song to the World – Musicians Patel and Nahmod brought dozens of people from around the world to create this song. They were inspired by the 21-Day Gratitude Challenge, and the song is a celebration of all that is a blessing in life.
Let’s create our own 21-Day Gratitude Challenge. Every day for 21 days, comment one thing you’re thankful for and why.
