Adventure Begins at Your Library! Summer Reading is here!!

Another year of school and all the adventures that go along with it have come to an end, but summer adventures are just beginning! Reminder that eBooks and audiobooks can still be accessed from SOMS without leaving your home or even on the beach or wherever you may travel to this summer! We have plenty of ebooks & audiobooks in SORA to get you through any adventure on the road, in the air or wherever you may end up.There are several options available. Please read about them here.While the school library is closed over the summer, our counterparts at the local public libraries would love to see you in person! 

The ELA Department of South Orangetown Central School District requires students to read over summer break. Research clearly correlates the amount of reading a student does over the summer to his or her academic growth over the school year. Students entering grade 6, 7 and 8 should read a minimum of two non-fiction and/or fiction books (approximately 500 pages or more) count as two books. This is a minimum requirement. We encourage students to read widely, and they should not limit themselves to two books.

Students will be responsible for demonstrating understanding of the books during the first few weeks of the school year. If you need suggestions or help finding books that are mutually acceptable to students and parents, please explore the following book lists/resources.
Due to the overwhelming number of new titles being published all the time, the ELA department has decided that students may choose to read books not included on these lists.
In addition to these lists, some teachers have recommended books during ELA class and some teachers may have more suggestions on their individual blog pages.
Note: Should your child choose a text that is part of the English Department’s curriculum, please know the student will be required to re-read the selection.

Some great resources available through the public libraries (anyone can use with any of the Mighty 5 Library Cards) include…

TumbleBooks – this site has books, games, graphic novels and foreign language. It’s mostly for elementary level children but the foreign language may be useful to middle/high school age kids.

There’s also the research database option on website homepages. They have everything from historical newspapers, to consumer reports, to Rosetta Stone, to Britannica school, etc.

Tudor:  Orangeburg and Tappan
Tutor.com – can be found in a few spots on their websites. Access is granted with a library card.

Hoopla.com – this site has audiobooks, Ebooks, movies, music TV and comics.
