Update

It’s been some time since the last update. The class has been focusing on many exciting topics.

The day begins with our spiral review in math using our Problems of the Week, Fundations, or grammar exercises.

We have been working on double vowel sounds for the past few weeks. This unit is focused on the long sound of “o”.

In Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop we have been working on series studies. The students have formed book clubs and are reading multiple books within a series. They have charted and shared how authors introduce new characters and how character’s feelings and traits are similar in each of the books. They have also recognized how this drives the story line of a book. In writing, the class has formulated strong opinions regarding characters and found evidence to support their opinions.

In math, we have just finished a unit on repeated addition/multiplication and are now working on place value. Continue to practice both addition and subtraction facts at home. This is always helpful.

In science we are on the last section of solids and liquids. Now the students will see how they interact with each other.

In social studies we have just concluded the unit on communities with a debate focused on “Is an urban community a favorable place to live?” They class had gathered information using many sources to gather their evidence. Some sources used were, the new Chrome books using a program called Nearpod, Hed Bandz, Heads Up, versions of Country Mouse City Mouse and their own research at home.

Our trip to the aquarium was a huge success. The students saw and learned about animals and their own habitats and what helps them survive in different areas.
