September Happenings!

Well, the first month of second grade has come and gone.

The students and the teachers have made a smooth transition into the year. Thank goodness the second graders drew us maps and told us the ins and outs of the building. Now we all know where everything is.

All of our routines are under way. The children have jobs and successfully carry them out when unpacking each morning.

Our morning starts off with Problems of the Week in Math, Journal writing or Daily Language Review which is focused on grammar.

We have special next, either PE or right now we have Music.

During math we are focused on addition and subtraction skills.

We have a nut free snack.

During Reader’s Workshop we have completed the Launch Unit and have reviewed strategies, think marks, predicting skills, set up our binder, exlpored different genres, and set up guided reading groups.

Fundations has looked at short vowel sounds, closed syllables, and glued sounds.

Lunch time has been going well with Mrs. Brennan.

In Social Studies we started our unit on Citzenship. Along with this the class voted on two repesentatives for Student Government. They are Helena and Colin. They will meet once a month with Ms. Carr.  Mrs. Eyer has also worked with our class on debates. Ask them about it!

In Writer’s Workshop we have just published our first piece this year. It was a Small Moment of their life. The class seems to favor writing time.

Mr. Jones has been in to talk about feelings and how we can think about how we feel.

Mrs. Kaplan has been in and we have worked on “How our engine runs.”  The class can give great examples of the different ways our body feels and how it should be “just right” for school.

We have done a lot and cannot wait to see all the things we may do in October.
