A) “13 Resons Why”

(13 reasons why Questions #1)

1. Who invaded Hannah’s privacy? What happened? What was her response?

2. Interpret this quote made by Hannah Baker…“And what about you – the rest of you – did you notice the scars you left behind? No, probably not because most of them can’t be seen with the naked eye.”

3. Was Hannah powerless?  Why or Why not?  How could she have been more in control of her own life when everyone around her seemed to be pushing her down?

4. Name the 4 characters we met so far and give a quick synopsis as to why they are on the tapes.

1. Rumors. Gossip. They sell. Discuss the TMZ, Perez Hilton, Enquirer, and People magazine mindset.  Why do we gossip?  How does it feel to be talked about?  How would it feel if the rumor being spread was untrue?

2. “When you hold people up for ridicule, you have to take responsibility when other people act on it.”

3. What is the significance of Monet’s Garden and Café?  In the story, the author makes several statements that lead the reader to think about common challenges teenagers face in day to day life.

4. Should Hannah have made the tapes?  Why do you think she did?

5. At the beginning of the first tape, Hannah says, “. . . there are thirteen sides to every story.” What does she mean by this?  Are there sides to her own story that Hannah doesn’t know?  Do you think she would have made different decisions if she had had the chance to listen to each of the other thirteen sides?

  1. Discuss the phrase “The truth will set you free.”How does this apply to the story

    Hannah tells?  Does truth really gift freedom?

  2. Hannah mentions reputations and their consequences repeatedly on the tapes.What sort of reputations do the other people on the tapes have?
  3. While listening to his tape, Clay says to Hannah, “You chose this.You had a choice and you pushed me away.I would have helped you.”Do you agree with Clay?
  4. What does the stop sign that Jenny hits with her car come to symbolize?Discuss what Clay means when he says, “We all could have stopped something.”How does this relate back to Hannah’s decision not to stop the situation between Bryce and Jessica at the party?How do you think that event in particular affected Hannah and her decision to take her own life?
  5. At the end of the story, Hannah asks Mr. Porter to define friendship.How would you have responded to this question?
  6. Could anything have saved Hannah? If one link in this chain of events had been different, which one do you think would have made the most difference for Hannah?
  7. What will you remember from reading this novel?

In no less than 5 paragraphs, write about the following….
If you were given the opportunity to receive four “gifts” from any person of your choice, what would you ask for? Who would it be from? Why would you choose such a gift? Do not think about materialistic things or things money can buy, but rather intangible things. (For example: friendship, kindness, thoughtfulness, heart, intelligence, athleticism, Hard work, Drive, passion, willingness to help others, etc.)
Write it with an opening paragraph and four body paragraphs. Think English class and your favorite English teacher!
