January at CLE – Cooperation

January Theme of the Month:

Communities Work Together

Overview: Cooperation the process of working together
RULER Emotion Words: Fulfilled, satisfied, grateful

How to be a Cooperative Person

  • Listen carefully to others and be sure you understand what they are saying

  • Share when you have something that others would like to have
  • Take turns when there is something that nobody wants to do, or when more than one person wants to do the same thing
  • Compromise when you have a serious conflict
  • Do your part the very best that you possibly can. This will inspire others to do the same
  • Show appreciation to people for what they contribute
  • Encourage others to do their best
  • Make people feel important and needed. Working together is a lot more fun that way
  • Don’t isolate or exclude anyone. Everybody has something valuable to offer, and nobody likes being left out

Community Service Project: Blizzard Boxes

This request may find you busy preparing for the upcoming holidays and sharing special celebrations with family and friends. It is our hope, however, that your family will reserve some time to help with our community service project.

Our community service activity this month is donating “Blizzard Boxes” to Meals on Wheels. We are welcoming Blizzard Boxes until Monday, December 16th. A Meals on Wheels representative will be joining William O. Schaefer for an assembly to personally receive the boxes and thank the SOCSD students for their kindness.

A BLIZZARD BOX is an assortment of donated non-perishable food items packed into shoeboxes. Refer to Blizzard Box Instruction to find out all the details, including the suggested foods. Please be sure to check product expiration date. NO fresh fruit or vegetables please!

Please wrap the lids separately from the boxes – wrap the top of the shoe box separately from the bottom of the shoe box (no boot boxes please) in grocery bag paper in order to make sure contents are easily accessible. Do not put any decorations on the box.

Students can use their imagination to draw pictures on the paper that senior citizens would enjoy receiving! The BLIZZARD BOXES will be delivered to the recipients of the Home Delivered Meals Program as a food source ahould the regular food deliveries be halted due to weather related or other emergencies.

For more information about Meals On Wheels and how you can help the Rockland County Community visit the Meals On Wheels website.

Please consider creating a BLIZZARD BOX with your family. Drop off your BLIZZARD BOX at William O. Schaefer (WOS), 140 Lester Drive, Tappan, New York between Tuesday, December 3th and Monday, December 16th.

Thank you in advance for giving so generously to the seniors in our community during this winter season.
Questions can be forwarded to hhill@socsd.org, ebarsanti@socsd.org, ccosgrove@socsd.org.

December at CLE – Friendship

“The only way to have a friend is to be one.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

    • Friendship is one of the best aspects of life.
    • Friendship is a close relationship between two people marked by feelings of care, respect, admiration, concern, or even love.
    • Friendship is a relationship between people who like each other and enjoy each other’s company.
    • Friendships increase your sense of belonging and purpose.
    • Friendships boost your happiness and reduce your stress.

Four Feet, Two Sandals by Karen Lynn Williams is a picture book about the relationship between two young girls in a refugee camp in Pakistan.
A young girl, Lina, finds a sandal after the relief workers threw used clothing out for the people to have. Let’s read to find out what a true friendship looks like.

Kid President is on a mission to meet lots of awesome kids! Sometimes meeting new people can be scary.
What if they’re too different and we don’t get along? What if things get really, really awkward?
Well, Kid President says, embrace the AWKWARD!
Let’s watch Kid President’s Guide to Making a New Friend.

Take A Seat, Make a Friend

Find a connection with someone.

Create a secret handshake with someone you don’t know.

Every child has the right to a good night. Every night in America, too many children go to sleep uncertain of what tomorrow will bring, compromising their health, school performance, and emotional well-being. At Pajama Program, we promote and support a comforting bedtime routine to help all children thrive by providing cozy pajamas, inspiring storybooks, and critical resources for caregivers. After all, Good Nights Are Good Days.

October at CLE – Acceptance

“Acceptance is not love. You love a person because he or she has lovable traits,
but you accept everybody just because they’re alive and human.” ~ Albert Ellis

  • Acceptance is the willingness to embrace feelings, habits, or beliefs that are different from your own.
  • Acceptance is the ability to experience or survive something unpleasant.
  • Acceptance is the willingness to tolerate a difficult or unpleasant situation.
  • We all have the human need and right to be accepted.

The Day You Begin By: Jacqueline Woodson

What is one way you can show acceptance to someone who may have differences to you?

September at CLE – Empathy

September is Communities Show Empathy.  It is the 18th Anniversary of September 11th. There were many courageous people who died that day.  This left others wanting to help and show empathy in some way. We as a community want to create the same atmosphere at Cottage Lane.  “Because there is no nation so powerful it cannot be wounded, nor a people so small they cannot offer mighty comfort.”  As a school community we want to show empathy to others just like the small village in 14 Cows for America.   Click the photo to hear the history of this bell. Look for the bell in the main hallway at Cottage Lane.
