The Advanced Placement Process (APP) is a NYSED & NYSPHSAA program that gives a chance for middle school students in grades 7 & 8  to play up at the high school level. In order for the middle school student to go through the APP process two items must be sent to the Athletic Office:

  1. An interest email from the parent must be sent to the Athletic Director Bill Pilla by 11/2 (wpilla@socsd.org).
  2. Accompanying this email should be a recommendation from a coach within the interscholastic program of SOCSD in that sport. If both are received by 11/2, the student will then be permitted to go through the following processes:
  • APP online registration
  • physical maturity test with MS school nurse
  • physical fitness testing on 11/8  (must pass 4/5 of the physical fitness tests).

The goal of the APP is to identify those students who possess the ability to participate at a higher level. With that, there also needs to be a level of maturity and commitment to be a part of the high school level program. It should also be known that being approved through the APP only ensures a tryout, and does not mean a student has made a HS team. If a student is approved to tryout and does not make the team, they are allowed to tryout and play for the modified team. Students in the 8th grade that were approved via APP as a 7th grader does not need to go through the process again, but still need to register online for the APP.

*Students and parents are not the only individuals that determine whether they go through the Advanced Placement Process a coaching recommendation is required.

Middle School Athletics begins on 11/27 and the online registration will open on 10/30 as per the NYSPHSAA rule of registration within 30 days of the start date of a sport.
