Author Khrys Robinson visited all first grade classes at WOS to share her book, Bella and the Great Picture Day. Khrys shared that her inspiration for writing this book stemmed from not seeing a lot of characters in books that looked like her when she went to school.
The main character, Bella, a “mini-me” of Khrys, wants to show off her best outfit on picture day. Bella’s mom tells her she can’t wear her tutu outfit to school so she changes it, but gets to keep her sparkly socks on. When Bella realizes that her socks will not be in the school photo, she comes up with a clever way to get them in the picture.
Khrys presented to two to three classes at a time to enable students to have more of an interactive experience and ask questions. Students were encouraged to write a small moment based on their picture day experience. Khrys also donated over 40 books for the school and every student received coloring sheets, Bella glasses, and stickers.
Khrys concluded her presentation with asking students to repeat after her, “I am wonderful, I am special, I am me, because being me is all that I need to be.”
