Our K-12 Math Leadership Team held its first meeting of the school year. The session began with the introduction of the district’s new secondary Math Instructional Coach, Marisa Premus. We worked through a paper folding activity to apply geometry and fractions standards and to model how students at various grade levels would construct convincing arguments.
The team discussed the New York State revisions to the Common Core Standards, now called the “Next Generation Learning Standards.” We talked about NYSED’s transition plan and changes occurring across the grade levels. The plan is to implement these changes over the next three years, beginning with K-2 this school year, to ensure that there are no learning gaps.
K-12 geometry standards were also reviewed, and it was determined that topics introduced in one grade were not covered again until two or three years later. For example, complementary and supplementary angles are introduced in fourth grade, but not covered again until seventh grade.
The team used the “Save the Last Word for Me” protocol to discuss the article Mathematic Truths, by Edward Frenkel, which led to lively discussions about deeper exploration in math. The session ended with an exploration of high school course offerings and what these options mean in terms of college and career.
