Libraries Matter, Get a Library Card

Libraries and librarians have evolved, and these days what they offer may surprise you. This video explains why libraries are more important than ever. It teaches:
• Why information is the real focus of every library
• How the Internet has impacted libraries
• Why more information isn’t always better
• How libraries and librarians help us navigate information
• What you are likely to find in libraries today

September is Library Card Sign-up Month—a time when the American Library Association and libraries across the country remind the community that a library card is the key to limitless opportunities.

Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. It is a time when the ALA and libraries across the country join together to remind parents and children that signing up for a library card is the first step towards academic achievement and lifelong learning.

A public library card is your ticket to free educational resources and activities that bring families together. Libraries not only provide resources to parents and children that support early literacy and lifelong learning, but truly transform how families spend time together.

Library card holders have free access to a family destination that provides a spectrum of free services, including digital workshops for all-ages; STEAM programs/activities; mother-daughter book clubs; family storytimes; and game nights.

This month, the students at William O. Schaefer will meet the public librarians from the local “Mighty Five” libraries, will share stories and speak with all the children about the value of having a library card.

For preschool age children libraries offer early literacy and lap sit story-times to encourage school readiness, for older children and teens libraries supplement education with hands-on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM ) programs and innovative makerspaces, and for older teens libraries have information and tools to help prepare for college and mentoring programs.

There’s really something for everyone and it’s all free with a library card. Get your library card today!
