This month in the library…the focus for kindergarten, first and second grades is nonfiction! Nonfiction is a genre of books that contain facts and information about various subjects. Students are checking out the nonfiction section to find books ranging from sign language to science experiments to sports, history, animals and more!
Students: Use the “November Nonfiction Activity List” below to help you learn more about how nonfiction is organized and to help you decide what area of nonfiction you are interested in reading about.
The first(1) activity requires you to select 3-6 Dewey Decimal Task Cards. You will need a Dewey Decimal recording sheet and a nonfiction picture chart. After reading the task card you and a partner must decide which Dewy Decimal number best answers the statement. If you need help reading the “Dewey Decimal Task Cards” click on the task card number below and listen as Ms. Eyer reads the card to you.
The second(2) activity gives you the choice to make a “Dewey Catcher” to test your Dewey Decimal knowledge OR to draw a detailed nonfiction topic and label it with the correct Dewey Decimal number. Follow the instructions posted at each center. If you need help reading the instructions, click the video below to listen to Ms. Eyer tell you about the center.

The third activity is optional and is intended for students who have completed activity parts one(1) and two(2).
