How to Read A Story

Accomplished storytellers Kate Messner and Mark Siegel chronicle the process of becoming a reader: from pulling a book off the shelf and finding someone with whom to share a story, to reading aloud, predicting what will happen, and—finally—coming to The End. How To Read A Story supports the reading and writing work students are doing in the classroom.

As a whole group, we will  “zoom in” to create a condensed How To Read a Book strategy. After sharing the title and shortening the “how-to” steps in the title, How To Read a Book by Kate Messner, we will discuss the whys and ways how-to books are used.

Using how-to books as mentor text will encourage students to be both teachers and writers as they create “how-to” books of their own. All students are experts that can teach someone “how-to”!
