Yesterday was Patriot Day.  We started our day by joining the whole school in the front of the building.

We said the Pledge of Allegiance together.  Mrs. Polansky talked about September 11th and how it was a sad day for many people but many good people did things to help others who felt sad.  She told us about a special book that was written called September Roses.  We ended the assembly with the song, Proud to Be an American.

When we got back to the classroom, we watched the September Roses video and shared how the video made us feel.  For some, we were happy and for others, we were sad.

Every class in the school was given a large paper rose.  Together,  we discussed ways to make someone feel better when they are sad.  Here's what people said:

  • Do something funny to make them laugh or smile
  • Say comforting words or give compliments
  • Offer to play with them
  • Give them a hug or a kiss
  • Read a story together
  • Tell them to write about it
  • Listen and talk together
  • Draw a picture for them
  • Make or buy them something nice
  • Be nice and helpful
  • Give them some space

Do you have a favorite patriotic song that you like to sing (or listen to)?
