TZHS Music Students Make NY All-State Music Festival
The Tappan Zee High School Music Department has just announced eight students have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association as All-State eligible for 2015 New York All-State Music Festival. This is a record setting number of students to reach All-States from Tappan Zee High School.
The students representing TZ are: Jane Choe (cello), Alice Tao (violin) and Kyle Fuller (trombone), performing with the Symphony Orchestra. Dain Cha (violin) performing with the String Orchestra. Amy Zhang (flute) performing with the Symphonic Band. Greg DeCola and Jarrett Morley will perform with the Mixed Chorus. Leonardo Ko (cello) has been chosen as an alternate.
Auditions for All-State ensembles take place every year in the spring and are extremely competitive. Of the many thousands of students that audition across the entire state of New York, only 350 reach the All-State Festival. All of the above students performed level VI works (the highest level of difficultly) received a score of 100 and were ranked at the top of their instrumental category.
The students will travel to Rochester, New York in early December where they will rehearse up to eight hours a day for three days with some of America’s most renowned conductors. The final performances will take place on December 5th and 6th at the Eastman Theater, one of the major performing halls in the United States.

American Young Voices Concert
The Fifth Grade Chorus from Cottage Lane Elementary School joined 3,000 students as part of the American Young Voices Concert in the Prudential Center in Newark on June 4, 2015. The Young Voices Concerts started in the United Kingdom twenty years ago, and this concert marked the United States debut. The concert featured more than one hundred choirs from the tri-state area who united to sing a medley of songs together. Each school choir rehearsed the concert repertoire independently with their music teachers. Mrs. Lisa Kahn, Cottage Lane Elementary music teacher and chorus director, began preparing the Fifth Grade Chorus in February. All of the choirs rehearsed together on Thursday afternoon, June 4, under the leadership of Francisco Nunez. Songs included “Can You Hear,” “Believe,” “When I Grow Up,” “Pop Medley,” “Livin’ on a Prayer,” “Give Us Hope,” and “All You Need is Love.” In addition to the American Young Voices, the concert featured a band and several acts that included breakdancing and sing-alongs of several current songs, with the entire audience joining in. The Cottage Lane fifth-graders had an amazing time, from moving and dancing with the music to taking pictures and selfies with the performers.
