Makerspace Initiative

Here in South Orangetown, we always strive to provide students with opportunities to apply their learning and provide them with skills for the 21st century. We realized we wanted to take another step forward in this direction and started to plan our first Makerspaces and maker driven units.

This vision started two years ago and really took shape in the 2014 – 2015 school year with the opening of the South Orangetown Middle School Makerspace and with the introduction of 3D printing units across the district.

We continue to open more spaces for students to explore in with two new spaces opening in the 2015 – 2016 school year (Cottage Lane Elementary & Tappan Zee High School). More importantly, we are implementing more units that utilize the tools, skills and mindsets that we teach to in our Makerspaces and integrating these units with our core content areas.
