We concluded our 7th Annual Summer STEAM Camp with more than 300 campers in attendance in grades K-8, and it was a huge success. For the past seven years, the program has been coordinated and planned by Samantha Levine, Instructional Science Coach, Jessenia Cursio, Social Worker, the Office of Curriculum and Instruction, SOCSD teachers and staff, and student volunteers from TZHS.
The two-week camp included hands-on activities that are focused on science, technology, engineering, art and math. Students had the opportunity to explore topics and work on projects that were exciting and engaging, along with ample opportunities to strengthen existing friendships and make new ones.
The SOCSD Summer STEAM Camp has been extremely successful, particularly during the height of the pandemic (fully remote), due to some key elements of the program:
- Outstanding STEAM Camp Coordinators, Samantha Levine and Jessenia Cursio
- A highly motivated and competent group of staff and student volunteers; many return year after year.
- Awesome students and parents
- A hands-on engaging curriculum that provides students with opportunities to rotate through various disciplines, projects, and activities across all disciplines
- Small group sizes of 10-12 students
- A test and assessment free zone
- Great snacks 🙂
- A physical activity rotation
- Opportunities for students and staff to develop meaningful relationships
This summer, campers rotated among stations which included robotics, Lego construction, build your own golf course, mindfulness exercises, dominoes, science-inspired arts and crafts, and strawberry DNA extraction. We’re looking forward to continuing the camp at no cost to current SOCSD students for many years to come!
