Curriculum and Instruction

img_1899-amleKaren Tesik, Brian Culot, and Dan Gross, from Innovative Designs in Education (IDE), presented at the Annual Middle Level Conference (AMLE) in Austin, Texas on October 11th. This presentation was on Systems Mapping, a process used to connect ideas or initiatives (Nodes) at the district, school, or classroom level. We modeled four nodes at the classroom level: Lesson Planning, Student Engagement, Assessment, and Problem-based learning. The mapping process is designed to promoted discussion about how each node affects or connects to the other nodes. For example, assessment should influence or change the lesson plan and not just merely be related.

Karen Tesik also presented with principals from Upstate New York on the National Schools to Watch Rubric and Program. She highlighted the four areas: Academic Excellence, Social Equity, Developmental Responsiveness, and Organizational Structures and Processes from the Schools to Watch Rubric that have helped guide South Orangetown Middle School through the process to gaining becoming recognized as a National School to Watch.
