How To Use a Shelfmarker

What is a library?

li·brar·y
ˈlīˌbrərē,ˈlīb(ə)rē/
noun

a building or room containing collections of books, periodicals, and sometimes films and recorded music for people to read, borrow, or refer to.
“a school library”
a collection of books and periodicals held in a library.
In order to keep a library organized, it is important to use shelf markers. Shelfmarkers allow books to be taken from the shelf  to hold a book’s place while browsing. If a student decides they do not want the book, they know exactly where to return the book to the shelf. Shelfmarkers help keep the library organized!

During your first visit to the library, students  will decorate and personalize their own library cards/shelfmarker! They will use this shelfmarker every time they visit the library and check out a book.

To help the students remember how to use the shelf marker, we will sing the Shelf Marker Hokey Pokey Song!

Shelf Marker Hokey Pokey

You put the shelfmarker in,
You take the book out,
You leave the shelfmarker in,
Find out what it’s about. (I flipped through the pages to show them I was deciding if this was The Book)
You do the hokey pokey
And you turn yourself around.
Put it back if your in doubt.

You put the book back in,
You take the marker out.
You put the marker in, (I show them how to put it in next to a different book)
Find out what it’s about.
You do the hokey pokey
And you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.

You take the book with you.
You take the marker too.
You line up at the desk
So you can check it out.
You do the Shelf Marker Hokey Pokeyy
And you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.
