Juan Bobo and the Pig

Today kindergarten students enjoyed a visit by Felix Pitre. Felix Pitre uses music, storytelling, puppetry and instruments to bring the culture of Latin America to life and further a better understanding of the people and their customs.

animaltalesStudents experienced a performance filled with lively stories and memorable songs. Coyote Rings the Wrong Bell (Mexico,) presents animals in the conflict for survival. Magical fables of kindness and reward will teach the importance of caring for our environment. The message instills respect for the animals in our lives and their right to exist while encouraging further study through reading, writing and performing.

During a library lesson we will read Juan Bobo and the Pig, a story retold by Pitre in his own bilingual style. This bilingual title fosters and creates multicultural awareness.  The natural flow and integration of spanish and english words allow students to be actively engaged while learning Spanish phrases such as Si, ¿Dónde Está? and puerquito (pig)!

In the United States, Spanish is the second language that most people learn. In fact, more than 38 million native Spanish speakers are now in the United States. Do you speak Spanish? ¿Habla usted Español?

Do you have a favorite book that is written in a bilingual style? What language is it written in? Korean? Japanese? Spanish? Let me know in the comment section below!
