COURSE OVERVIEW

Our fore-fathers realized that the Constitution would need to be changed as the people deemed necessary. They recognized how the Constitution adapted or changed to address the needs of specific groups of people, the rights of individuals and the power of the government.  They also recognized the social ideas of the people and how these ideas influenced the Constitution. In this course your will learn about the personal freedoms the Constitution grants its people and about the laws people must follow based on the Constitution.

Enduring Understandings:

Since 1789 the United States has recognized the Constitution as the highest law of the land. The power and limitations of the government and the powers and rights of the people are spelled out in the Constitution. It determines the powers of the three branches of the government legislative, executive and the judical.

Essential Questions:

  1. How do the amendments address the rights of the people?
  2. How can we determine the rights of the people vs. the power of the government through the amendments?
  3. How have the amendments addressed the needs of specific groups of people?
  4. How has the role of the president and the legislative branch changed through the amendments?
  5. Why have taxes been a constant issue in America?

Learning Objectives:

  2. How does the Constitution limit the governments power in the 4th-8th amenedments?
  3. What powers are given back to the states and people in the 9th and 10th amendments? Why is this important?
  4. Why are the 13th, 14th and 15th amendments important?
  5. How does the 19th amendment establish equality in America?
  6. Why are taxes a constant issue in America?
  7. How does the amendments continually address the needs/rights of the people when voting?
  8. How does the amendments grant people the right to personal freedoms?
  9. How does the amendments limit the power of the President?
