Tappan Zee High School

Congratulations to Tappan Zee High School senior Nicole Gontaryk, the South Orangetown Rotary Club’s October Student of the Month! Nicole entered her senior year with a grade point average of 98.8. She has achieved this feat through hard work and determination. Never one to take the easy road, Nicole has pushed herself academically year after year through some of the most difficult courses TZHS offers. Some highlights include a 96 average in AP US History last year, two years of college-level Spanish, and a demanding senior year schedule.

Not only does Nicole challenge herself academically, but she has a full after-school schedule as well. She mentors students through the Peer Leadership Program and tutors students in need. She works diligently as editor of the TZHS World Language Journal and, for the last two and a half years, she has volunteered weekly as a docent at the Orangetown Historical Museum. In Summer 2018, Nicole interned with Congresswoman Nita Lowey’s New City office, where she assisted with cases, updated databases, and communicated with constituents.

Nicole also has a creative side that she expresses through her talents in dancing and singing. A dancer since childhood, Nicole has been a principal member of Coupe Theater Studio since third grade and has consistently been selected for the most advanced ensemble groups.

Eight TZHS seniors are nominated for South Orangetown Rotary Club Student of the Month recognition by school counselors each school year. In seeking qualified candidates, community service–a core tenet of Rotary International–is strongly emphasized. At the end of the school year, one Student of the Month honoree is awarded a scholarship. A plaque recognizing all Student of the Month recipients is displayed at TZHS.
