Seven Tappan Zee High School sophomores enrolled in PLTW – Project Lead The Way Engineering coursework attended the AAUW Rockland New York State Society of Professional Engineers (NYSSPE) Women in Engineering Conference at the Garnerville Library on Monday.
It’s the sixth year that Technology Team Leader Nicholas Desantis has taken students to the annual event. “The purpose is to expose our younger, female high school students to the various fields of engineering. The guest speakers are very engaging and most are recent college graduates, so they connect easily with students and discuss real world projects they are currently working on or have recently completed. They also give great advice about what to expect in the first few years of college as an engineering major.”
The PLTW Engineering program is a four-year sequence of courses which, when combined with mathematics and science courses, introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of design and engineering prior to entering college. PLTW students can earn college credits through coursework, which includes Principles of Engineering, Aerospace Engineering and Civil Engineering and Architecture.
