To kick off a unit on John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, ninth-graders spent yesterday’s class period engaged in a self-guided “Escape Room” challenge created by Tappan Zee High School Library Media Specialist Patty Eyer. The circuit of six interactive activities were designed “to provide historical context for the novel through primary sources,” Eyer explained.

“It’s a hands-on way to explore primary sources and it’s competitive, which they love,” added English teacher Riley Chevrier. “The approach is different from what normally happens in a traditional classroom and it really appeals to kids who learn differently.”
