Tappan Zee High School’s FIRST Robotics Competition team, South Orangetown BOTZ, honored its seniors this afternoon as part of a global campaign–FIRST Signing Day–to highlight graduating team members and their post-graduation plans.
FIRST’s mission is to inspire the next generation of science and technology leaders through mentor-based robotics programs that build STEM skills, inspire innovation, and foster self-confidence, communication, and leadership.
TZHS’ two-year-old team has earned its way to the FIRST Championship Detroit in both 2018 and 2019. Members are coached by Tappan Zee High School Computer Science/Makerspace teacher Karen Connell, TZHS Math/Computer Science Teacher Barbara Murphy and SOCSD Instructional Technology Coach Marc Eckert and mentored by professionals in the engineering, technology, banking, business, graphic design and public relations fields.
“From the coursework you started here at Tappan Zee High School and most, if not all, of what your work with robotics will inform and define your work in college and beyond,” said SOCSD Superintendent Dr. Robert Pritchard. “Congratulations and best wishes. I can’t wait to see what you all do next.”
