The #SOCSDMentorMonday Facebook campaign highlights community members who directly mentor students on a sustained, voluntary basis through our schools. Through their dedicated volunteerism, mentors offer students meaningful opportunities to explore interests and career pathways–and to develop real world job skills.
Dan Hludzinski, Senior Advisor for Enterprise Architecture at CVS Health, has been working with South Orangetown BOTZ members at Tappan Zee High School to research and develop pure pursuit path-tracking algorithms for robotic autonomous driving. “The FIRST Robotics Competition is a great program using cutting-edge technologies that align with my experience. Mentoring the team gives me a chance to share my expertise with kids aspiring to enter STEM fields,” he says.
Nico C., a junior and member of the software subteam, has worked closely with Dan over the past several months. “Working with Dan has helped me in so many ways! Without his help, I wouldn’t have been able to even start working on pure pursuit. It most definitely ties in to what I want to do in college, which is computer science.”
The #SOCSDMentorMonday campaign will extend throughout the spring. Interested in mentoring students in your field of expertise? Contact Family Engagement Center Coordinator AJ Walker at awalker1@socsd.org.
