Tappan Zee High School junior Hannah Ahn has earned a 2019 Scholastic Art & Writing National Gold Key Award for her sculpture, “Conscious of the Male Gaze”! Students from across the U.S. submitted nearly 340,000 works to the Scholastic Awards this year; National Gold Key Award-winning pieces represent the most outstanding works in the nation.
Although she has been making art from a young age–”as soon as I could”–Hannah says that a clay course she took 18 months ago changed everything. “I realized that my true passion is sculpture,” she says. Hannah aspires to become a surgeon and credits art for developing her fine motor skills and an appreciation of the work. “I think I’ll take that with me,” she notes.
TZHS Art Teacher Donna Grasso observes that Hannah, who is also a co-editor of Tones, is at the top of her game. “Hannah is really an exemplar for everything she does in art. She’s talented and creative in both 2D and 3D–she has it all,” says Ms. Grasso.
For younger artists, Hannah offers simple advice: “Don’t try to force the art. Let it come to you naturally.” Congratulations, Hannah!
