Seven members of Tappan Zee High School’s Class of 2018 have earned Eagle Scout rank, a prestigious milestone of achievement for Boy Scouts. They are: Anthony Albanese (Troop 37), Chris Bonardi (Troop 37), Robert Frost (Troop 255), Tristan Kuiper (Troop 255), Connor Petry (Troop 37), Matt Russell (Troop 255) and Nishan Torigian (Troop 37).
In order to earn the Eagle Scout rank, a Boy Scout must meet rigorous requirements, including a service project. Many of the graduating Eagle Scouts chose to do renovation projects at local churches; however, Tristan built dog kennels for Hi-Tor Animal Care Center and Chris refurbished the slate walkway and retaining wall at the American Legion John M. Perry Post #1044.
So what inspires this level of commitment?
- “Determined parents. Matt’s mom was a big inspiration. She was our troop leader in third grade and I remember seeing seniors who had become Eagle Scouts, and I wanted to do that.” (Connor)
- “It’s a tremendous honor.” (Robert)
- “A passion for the group.” (Nishan)
- “Helping other people is a big part. Younger Scouts help older kids with their service projects, and then it’s your turn to step up.”(Matt)
Stepping up is also a valuable learning experience, notes Anthony. “I learned a lot about leadership and how to manage people–which strategies are effective, and which aren’t.”
“And it teaches you a lot of organizational skills,” Chris added.
Here’s where the TZHS Class of 2018 Eagle Scouts are headed:
- Anthony: SUNY Geneseo
- Chris: Manhattan College
- Robert: University of Rhode Island
- Tristan: Marist College
- Connor: University of Scranton
- Matt: Stony Brook University
- Nishan: Rockland Community College
Congratulations to all!
