The South Orangetown Middle School Italian club and Italian classes have been very busy this fall, reports club advisor and foreign language teacher Mrs. Roberta Avantifiori. “We started off the year dancing the Tarantella at the Italian Feast in September. In the month of October, Italian Heritage Month, the club and classes made pizzelle, decorated the school with the pictures of famous Italians and Italian words and went to the Order Sons of Italy Lodge in Blauvelt to spend a very pleasant afternoon, playing bocce, horseshoes and a barbecue with the members of the lodge,” she says. “We also had cannoli for dessert!”
Middle schoolers also teamed up with high school Italian language students to organize the 3rd Annual Italian Pot Luck Dinner for families and friends. Everyone brought a favorite recipe to share. Attendees ate, danced the Tarantella, played tombola (an Italian game similar to Bingo) and won lots of prizes. Fun was had by all, young and old. For November 1-2, SOMS Italian Club members made cookies called “bones of the dead” and are now preparing to bring holiday cheer to the Thorpe Senior Center, where they will sing Italian holiday songs, dance the Tarantella and play tombola with the senior citizens there.
