Over the past two weeks, eighth-grade Design and Drawing for Production students leveraged their design skills to create holiday messages of hope and gratitude for recovering service members at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. The letters will be sent through the American Red Cross. “We began with hand skills, using pencils and pens and markers, and then transferred to digital skills, using Photoshop and our CNC laser engraver, to design and make the cards,” said Technology teacher Louis Chugranis.
Design and Drawing for Production is a high school engineering course offered for eighth-graders at SOMS. “I like that this is a high school level class and I can go onto take more classes to explore other design opportunities at Tappan Zee,” said Nolan C.
“I chose to design my card with a Coast Guard theme and want to explore a career in design,” noted Timothee M. “I hope these cards make the holidays better for these service members. I’m glad I got to do this for them.”
To help inform the community service project, Superintendent Robert Pritchard, Principal Chad Corey and Assistant Principal Joseph Onativia shared their personal or family experiences in the military as guest speakers.
